Shopping Hours
Shopping hours are generally from 8:30 or 9 until 4:30 or 5 on weekdays and until 12:30 or 1 on Saturdays. In small towns
shops may shut for lunch. Most close on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The big shopping malls in the major cities tend to
be an exception, often having evening shopping, and remaining open on the weekend.
South African Writers If you are looking for local fiction in English there is a wide range to choose from. Well-known authors include novelists Andre Brink, J. M. Coetzee (twice winner of the Booker Prize), Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, Ezekiel Mphahlele, Sol Plaatjie and Olive Schreiner; among the short-story writers, the best-known are Herman Charles Bosman and Richard Rive. Recycled Art Local artists and craftspeople are skilled at creating striking, often beautiful objects out of the most unpromising recycled materials. Look out for chickens made from folded and trimmed plastic rubbish bags; cars and earrings made from the metal of soft drink cans; and aeroplanes, cars, animals and fruit bowls made from galvanised wire. Buying Locally South Africans say 'Local is lekker (nice)'. If you want to follow this principle in your shopping, buy ceramics, jewellery and paintings in Cape Town; ostrich eggs and leather in Oudtshoorn; wooden articles along the Garden Route, especially around Knysna; curios, masks, beadwork and baskets in KwaZulu-Natal; and skins, painted cloth and batiks in Mpumalanga. |
